Best Food Apps for Thanksgiving
Okay, I couldn’t help myself…. I LOVE THANKSGIVING! Our very short but beloved Fall season in Alberta is the most magical time of year for me. Things seem to slow down just for a second as the cool crisp air of September rolls in and the leaves turn to golden hues that hug our neighborhoods. #Simple and #Beautiful.
With Thanksgiving arriving this Monday, most people’s thoughts will be turning to food. What would this weekend be without a table heaving with turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, surrounded by friends and family.
There are countless ways to enjoy the gastronomic delights of the holiday, and, thankfully, countless ways that technology can help! We’ve pulled together a few of the best food apps and online services around, designed to help you and your family enjoy the holiday stress-free!
It is by no means compulsory to stay in on Thanksgiving. Why stress over a hot stove, when you can let someone else take on the heavy lifting? Zomato’s mission is ‘to ensure nobody has a bad meal’, and the app lets you search for and discover restaurants to eat out at based on user reviews and ratings, and provides info, menus and photos to help you choose.
Don’t want to cook?
You might want to stay home, do Thanksgiving in a more cozy, relaxed setting, but you just can’t face preparing a meal for the extended family. Don’t worry, Foodora has you covered. Covering Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Quebec and Vancouver, this app puts restaurants you love, and that don’t usually deliver, at your fingertips. Their bike couriers are environmentally friendly too, so what’s not to love?
Cooking made easy
If you do want to go the whole hog and keep it traditional, your smartphone is still your friend. HelloFresh deliver recipe boxes with all the ingredients you need to prepare truly delicious meals, measured out in advance, with easy to follow instructions from a selection of chef-curated recipes. Their plans are incredibly flexible, and you can cancel at any time.
Yummly lets you search over 2 million recipes, with search filters to narrow down your culinary desires by cuisine, occasion, cook time, diet…really whatever you can think of. The schedule function helps you plan your cooking and mealtimes, and the smart shopping list sorts everything by grocery store aisle! It is even linked with Instacart, so your ingredients can be with you within a matter of hours at the tap of a button.
If you fancy something a bit more left-field, try Parks Canada’s Heritage Gourmet app. This brings together over 70 recipes from the 18th century to today, all updated in consultation with modern chefs. Each recipe includes a Canadian historical story and information on a Canadian historical site, so you can impress your guests with your exceptional grasp of the history of this wonderful country!
What to drink
The food is in the oven, the guests are on their way, and you open the refrigerator only to discover that you are out of beer. Luckily, Drizly (in Calgary and Edmonton) and Runner (in Toronto) have an exceptional selection of beer, wine and spirits, and can have a case of your favourite at your front door within the hour.
The next morning
After the party, the last thing you’ll want to think about is cooking again. Thankfully, both Tim Horton’s and Panera Bread can help. Panera gives you a free pastry just for downloading their app, and then again on your birthday. You’ll also earn points towards free food and drinks every time you spend. Timmy’s app gives you your third coffee for free, meaning true coffee addicts can get their evening cup of joe free every day!
Whatever you do and whatever you eat and drink this weekend, have a happy Thanksgiving!
